12 questions to ask before you hire an interior designer
Most interior problems start before any work does: a vague quote, an unclear scope, or nobody owning the result. These are the questions worth asking at the first meeting, whoever you end up choosing.
The short answer
Before you sign, find out who actually builds the work, what the quote includes and leaves out, which materials and brands are specified, how payments link to progress, and what happens if something goes wrong after handover. Get every answer in writing.
About the team
1. Who will build it: your team or subcontractors?
Some studios design and then hand the drawings to whichever contractor is free. Others have their own carpenters, electricians and site supervisors. Neither is automatically wrong, but you should know who is on site and who answers for their work.
2. Who is my one point of contact?
Ask for a name. On a full home interior you will have dozens of small questions a week. If they go to a different person each time, decisions get lost.
3. Can I see a finished project, and speak to that client?
Photos online can come from anywhere. A finished home you can visit, or a past client who will take your call, tells you much more. Ask to see one that was handed over a year or more ago, so you can see how the work has aged.
About the quote
4. Is the quote itemised?
Every item should have a size, a board grade, a finish and a hardware brand. "Kitchen: ₹X" tells you nothing you can check. Our guide on what decides the cost of a home interior explains what each line should say.
5. What is not included?
Civil work, electrical, plumbing, paint, lights, loose furniture, appliances, GST, design fees and transport are the usual gaps. Ask for the exclusions as a written list.
6. How are changes priced once work starts?
You will change your mind about something. Ask how a change is priced and approved, and whether it is confirmed in writing before the work goes ahead.
About materials
7. Which ply, laminate and hardware brands, exactly?
The grade of plywood and the brand of hinges and drawer channels make the biggest difference to how long carpentry lasts. Ask for the names in the quote, and whether you can check the boards on site.
8. Will I see samples before you order?
Laminates, veneers and paint colours look different on screen. Insist on physical samples, ideally seen in your own flat in daylight.
About the work
9. What is the schedule, stage by stage?
A total number of weeks is not enough. Ask when electrical, ceiling, carpentry and paint each happen, and which of your decisions each stage depends on. Our stages of a full home interior guide shows the usual order.
10. How do payments link to progress?
Payments tied to finished stages protect both sides. Be careful with a very large advance that isn't tied to any delivered work.
11. How will I know what is happening on site?
Ask how often you'll get updates and photos, and whether you can visit the site at any time.
After handover
12. What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
Ask what is covered (carpentry, hardware, electrical work), for how long, and who you call. A warranty is only as good as how quickly someone comes to fix a sagging shutter.
A simple rule
If an answer is vague now, before you have paid anything, it will not get clearer later. A good studio will be happy to answer all twelve, in writing.
